What to do when your NDIS plan runs out of funding

Reviewed by the My Care Link Australia Editorial Team · Last reviewed

Running low before the plan year ends is common and fixable, but only if you act early. This guide covers how to check exactly where you stand, what to change this week, and how to ask the NDIA for a reassessment without losing supports in the meantime.

First, find out exactly where you stand

Before doing anything else, get the real numbers. Guessing leads to cutting supports you did not need to cut.

    • Ask your plan manager for a statement by category, not a total
    • If you are self-managed or agency-managed, check the myplace participant portal
    • List which category is short — Core, or a specific Capacity Building line
    • Work out the burn rate: funding used divided by months elapsed, compared with months remaining
    • Check for unbilled invoices sitting with providers — they can hide weeks of spend

Core Supports funding is usually flexible between Core categories, so a shortfall in one Core line is not always a real shortfall.

    What to change this week

    • Move regular supports to weekday daytime where possible — evenings, weekends and public holidays cost considerably more
    • Protect the supports that keep you safe and at home: personal care, medication support, essential transport
    • Pause the discretionary ones first — social outings, non-urgent therapy blocks
    • Check travel and cancellation charges on recent invoices for anything that looks wrong
    • Tell your providers what is happening so they do not schedule shifts you cannot fund

Ask your plan manager to flag any claim that would take a category below a threshold you set. Most will do this if asked.

    Asking for a plan reassessment

If your circumstances have changed — more support needed, a new diagnosis, a carer no longer available, a hospital admission, a move — you can ask the NDIA for a plan reassessment (a change of circumstances request). Running out of funding on its own is not usually enough; what persuades is evidence that your needs have changed or were underestimated.

Include recent allied health reports, a support schedule showing actual hours used and why, and a short plain statement of what happens without the support. Send it through your plan manager or support coordinator if you have one — they do this often.

Keeping essential supports going in the meantime

A reassessment takes time, so plan for the gap. Talk to your providers early — many will rearrange rosters, shift hours to cheaper times or hold a place for you if they know in advance. Ask about lower-cost equivalents: a group program instead of one-to-one, a fortnightly instead of weekly clean.

Your state or territory also runs services outside the NDIS — community health, carer respite through Carer Gateway, and local council programs. These are worth a call while you wait.

    Stopping it happening next plan

    • Check your remaining budget every month, not every quarter
    • Keep a simple record of hours used and why they were needed
    • Raise a shortfall as soon as the burn rate looks wrong, not at month ten
    • Bring evidence of actual usage to the next planning conversation
    • Ask for the plan to reflect the week you actually have, not the week you hope for

    Frequently asked questions

What happens if my NDIS funding runs out early?

Supports paid from that category stop being claimable until the next plan starts. You can request a plan reassessment if your circumstances have changed, and rearrange supports in the meantime.

Can I get more funding mid-plan?

Yes, through a change of circumstances request, but it needs evidence that your needs have changed or were underestimated — not simply that the money ran out.

How do I check my remaining NDIS budget?

Ask your plan manager for a statement by category, or check the myplace participant portal if you are self- or agency-managed.

    Will my supports stop immediately?

Providers cannot claim from an exhausted category. Tell them early — many can rearrange hours, move supports to cheaper times or hold your place while a reassessment is considered.

Does running out of funding affect my next plan?

Not by itself. What helps is clear evidence of what support you actually used and why, which the NDIA can consider at your next planning conversation.
